CeReRe Fringe garden
Thu 23 May @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm BST
An event every day that begins at 8:00 am, repeating until Sat 25 May, 2019
Ceres was a Roman goddess of agriculture as well as fertility in general. This meant that in pretty much every way possible, she was one of the goddesses directly responsible for life itself. According to some myths, it was Ceres who showed humans how to grow wheat. According to others, she saved humanity from famines.
The “garden job” has just began, it involves the pupils of our school, the staff, and the neighbourhood. The Istituto Statale di Istruzione Speriore Leopoldo II di Lorena is a very diverse school with many fields of study. As a growing forest we will reach the climax from 18th to 26th May: students will be the speakers/guides through the paths of the garden describing our plants community and the art exhibition.
CeReRe: our garden exhibits our genetic heritage of ancient and modern grains together with their inseparable natural companions: poppies, cornflowers, delphinium. It is intended to present a new way of gardening with Graminaceae and promote extreme foraging! Through the green colour of the seedlings and the brownish of the adult plants, the spots of red and blue, enjoying hue chroma and shades should be the sense of our garden. (During late spring, yellow and light brown are the dominant colours of south Tuscany).
Special events in the garden:
Sculpture: Tony Scarduzio and his iron works together with the work of our disability inclusion group will decorate the space.
Special wellness: the wellness operator school will offer the opportunity to participate in laboratories for the transformation of aromatic and medicinal plants and herbs into natural cosmetic products. These plants will be visible in the garden with descriptions; it will also be possible to watch their application in cosmetic and aesthetic treatments with direct demonstration.
The coastal dune and its vegetation: there will be an exhibition about the coastal dune vegetation with endangered species.
International day for biological diversity – our ancient grains: a speaker from the Department of food production science and environment from the University of Florence, Drago association for cultivating ancient grains, Festa contadina guerrilla farming in Grosseto, Pulmino contadino consumer collective. In addition, 20th May is Agrobiodiversity National Day and we will prepare a public meeting in the surrounding area. The pupils are preparing a presentation about this topic and specially about some accession of seeds from Maremma (the south Tuscany land). [They will present their work on May 17th in the auditorium.]
