Common Thread – A Knitted Landscape
Sat 21 May, 2016
An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until Sun 12 June, 2016
Stoke Newington Common Users Group (SNUG) is a collection of residents who have brought a badly neglected open space back into the heart of our community. Over the years we have fund-raised for a playground, planted thousands of bulbs, held fun days, film nights and other community activities. An active part of SNUG is our knitting group – Common Thread.
In 2014 Hackney Museum mounted an exhibition on the theme of community and Common Thread decided to make a 3D knitted and crocheted model of our beloved Common. And that’s when the fun started! Have you ever tried to knit a tree?
The finished creation is now on permanent display in Stoke Newington Library. Common Thread would like to invite you to see it for yourself. We are also running the following workshops:-
Knitting the Common Saturday 21st May 2pm – 4pm, Stoke Newington Library
How we set about designing and making the Common. The core designing and knitting team will talk about our design journey, community involvement, mistakes, problems and solutions.
Make a Miniature Tree Saturday 28th May 2pm – 4pm, Stoke Newington Library
A practical workshop for adults. Learn how to make a woollen tree which you may take away with you. Please note that you need to be an intermediate knitter or crochet worker. All materials provided.
Creating Plants from Yarn Saturday 11th June 10.30am – 12.30pm or 2pm – 4pm, Stoke Newington Library
