London’s First Floating Pocket Park
Mon 29 May, 2017
An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until Sun 4 June, 2017
LONDON’S FIRST FLOATING PARK OPENS – Dawn until Dusk – opening on 29 May
The new 730m2 floating park in Paddington Basin on the Grand Union Canal will provide a striking green public space on the water with its own canal boat mooring. The park features open lawn areas, densely planted nectar-rich mixed raised borders and communal seating, as well as allowing people to walk over the water on a series of decked platforms and walkways. A diverse planting scheme has been developed to encourage wildlife and the park includes a separate pontoon designed to attract ground-nesting birds. The park will form part of the Greater London Authority’s ‘green infrastructure’ – an ongoing initiative to improve and connect streets, squares, parks, and canal and riverside spaces across London.
There will be many activities happening on the Floating Pocket Park during the Chelsea Fringe. For all listings please head to our website. Events include talks by experts at the Canal and Rivers Trust on how to garden in small spaces and the history of gardening on the canals. The park designer will also be speaking about the project and answering any questions, such as what considerations did he have when choosing the planting and how did he get the park to float?!
The waterway will also have plenty to offer, with floating shops, self-drive boats to hire and even paddleboards for those feeling adventurous. The Chelsea Fringe is the perfect event to launch this fantastic new green space to the public
