Social Therapeutic Horticulture in Practice
Mon 18 May, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm BST
Thrive uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. This therapy is known as social and therapeutic horticulture – the process of working with plants to improve physical and psychological health, and communication and thinking skills.
At 12.30 on the weekdays of the event we will be holding a talk on the latest developments in social and horticultural therapy and the ways in which we are looking to improve our main garden in order to fit in with the developments.
Within Battersea Park Thrive also maintains 2 other gardens, the Old English Garden and the Herb Garden. The Old English Garden is the jewel in the crown, this award winning herbaceous walled garden is maintained by Thrive gardeners giving the opportunity to work in a high maintenance garden from which we run both qualification groups and general sessions. Whilst the Herb Garden is our working garden. Here we grow plants from seed for the Old English Garden, the sales kiosk, and Chelsea Flower Show. In this garden there is also a vegetable and herb beds, surprisingly edible bed, woman’s and men’s health bed.
We will also be holding daily plant hunts for children, giving the children the opportunity to identify plants in order to win prizes!
