The SPAB’s Shadow Garden
Sat 6 June, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm BST
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings’ Shadow Garden
For the second year the SPAB’s courtyard garden will be taking part in the Chelsea Fringe. An oasis in bustling Spitalfields, our charming shaded courtyard will be open to visitors on Saturday 6 June.
The SPAB headquarters at No 37 Spital Square was built in 1740, when the silk trade was at its peak. On the day you can learn more about the gardening ‘crazes’ of the 1740s, 1840s and 1940s, and have a go at garden themed craft activities. Julie Charlesworth, our gardener, will be on hand to answer your questions about plants that thrive in the shade. We will also be selling shade-loving baby ferns and other plants.
The garden has some established planting including a Magnolia grandiflora. More recently Julie has put in more shade-tolerant native plants with year-round interest, as well as developing a small herb area, based on herbs mentioned by Nicholas Culpeper, the physician and apothecary who lived in Spitalfields in the 17th century.
The garden behind the railings at the front of the building is available to view at any time: this includes a small container garden, which includes plants for dyeing and perfuming fabric and wool, and there will also be a display of plants representing the different centuries witnessed by No 37.
The rear courtyard garden will be open on Saturday 6 June from 10am – 4pm. Please note this is a small garden with access through the building so numbers will be limited. We have no facilities available or wheelchair access – there are steps up to the building and into the garden.
