‘This speaking garden’
Thu 24 May, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm BSTFree
The garden of the British Medical Association is on the site of Charles Dickens’ original house and will be the setting for an afternoon of lectures and discussions centred around the 400th anniversary of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, and the legacy of founding apothecary, John Parkinson.
The BMA invites you to celebrate the work of John Parkinson, 17th Century London apothecary and gardener. His book ‘Paradisi in Sole, Paradisus Terrestris’ [1629 ] is both a scientific study of medicinal plants, and a journey of delight in the beauty of plants.
“I should not only speak of Garden herbs, but of many…that grow wild in the fields…and put them all together, that the taste of the one may amend the relish of the other.” See ‘this speaking garden’ on youtube here
Our speakers are many: Anna Parkinson, author of Nature’s Alchemist; Alex Laird director of Living Medicine; John Ford, from Worshipful Society of Apothecaries; Asiya Yunus, Medical Director of London Medical Committee; Prof Michael Heinrich and his team from UCL School of Pharmacy, offering a taste of teas and stories of ‘Rhubarb’ and…YOU !
We will also explore how gardens and plants continue to contribute to the health and wellbeing of patients and communities today.
