Wildflower Bee Hotel
Sat 16 May, 2015
Wild Flag Studios in collaboration with Friends of Turnham Green have created the Wildflower Bee Hotel – a sculptural habitat for bees to be installed in Turnham Green’s Wildflower Meadows for the duration of this year’s Chelsea Fringe Festival. Working in partnership with local bee experts, this habitable art installation is intended to attract both solitary bees and bumble bees which nest above ground in stems, holes and trees. The sculpture serves to both house and protect the bees, and inspire discussions concerning the decline in bee population.
According to the data of the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), bee colony losses across England have more than doubled since 2012, from 16% cent in 2012 to 34% per cent in 2013. Though the rate of loss is slowing (in 2014 BBKA reported a loss of 10% of colonies), it is still dangerously high, putting British farming, flora and fauna and farming at significant risk.
The Wildflower Bee Hotel installation will function as a catalyst for Bee The Change, an afternoon gathering to celebrate the bees and learn how to keep British farming, flora and fauna thriving.
